Weird Smell From a New Furnace: Is It Normal?

You may have noticed an unfamiliar smell after having installed a new furnace in your home. It’s common to worry that something is wrong with it, but it doesn’t always mean there is a problem. Amber Air Conditioning Inc. takes a look at some of the peculiar odors coming out of new furnaces and the meaning behind each.

Burning Dust

When you first turn on a new furnace, you may have noticed a musty smell coming from the unit itself or in the air around it. This is usually caused by dust that has collected on and around the heating elements being burned off as they heat up for the first time during use. The smell should dissipate after running for a while. If it doesn’t go away, there may be another issue, such as faulty wiring or inadequate ventilation in your home’s ductwork system.

Natural Gas

If you have a natural gas-powered furnace installed, you might also notice an unusual odor when you start using it again after leaning on to your air conditioning system for comfort in the summer months. As it generates heat, small amounts of sulfur compounds present in natural gas are combusted, releasing an odor similar to rotten eggs indoors through vents inside your home. If the odor persists more than a few days or if it smells like gas inside your home, get in touch with your local HVAC technician for an inspection to address any potential issues.

Electrical Components

Some newer models contain electrical components that can produce their own unique odors upon initial use due to insulation materials breaking down over time before finally reaching peak performance levels. While this usually dissipates within a few minutes, long-lasting odors similar to burning plastic is an indication of a wiring or electrical issue. This requires immediate attention from a licensed technician.

How to Prevent Furnace Odor Buildup

Scheduling regular maintenance visits with an experienced HVAC contractor is imperative, as this will help keep all of your furnace components functioning properly and minimize any future unpleasant smells emanating from within its internal mechanisms. Additionally, consider changing out the filter frequently to maintain optimal air quality inside your home and better performance for the unit’s life span!
