A heat pump that isn’t pumping enough heat doesn’t just make for an uncomfortable winter: it may also increase heating costs and wear and tear. In today’s post, local heating and air conditioning company Amber Air Conditioning Inc. discusses how to troubleshoot your heat pump if it’s not heating properly.

Check the thermostat. Many HVAC system problems are the result of nothing more than a problem with the thermostat. Start troubleshooting by taking the thermostat off the wall and making sure the connectors are clean. You may have to reset the thermostat to its factory settings and replace its batteries. You can also try to “wake up” the thermostat by turning it up a few degrees, check if it puts out more heat, then turn it back to its original settings.

Check the air filter. Air filters trap dust and other particles, which helps maintain good indoor air quality. A typical whole-home HVAC system may need a new air filter every three months, or up to once a month during seasons of heavy use. A clogged air filter can impede airflow, which will result in lower heating output through the vents. Fortunately, air filters are user-replaceable, which means they can be replaced without needing an HVAC service appointment.

Check the outdoor unit. Most of the heating process occurs at the heat pump’s outdoor unit. If the problem persists after resetting the thermostat and replacing the air filter, check the outdoor unit for signs of a problem. Check the refrigerant line for leaks and to see if it’s making grinding noises or is otherwise being unusually loud. If this is the case, make a service appointment with your HVAC technician.

A Word on HVAC Maintenance

Many HVAC problems can be avoided by keeping up with regular HVAC maintenance. Heat pumps that double as air conditioners during the summer will need to be inspected twice a year. In addition to helping prolong HVAC service life, it can also help you avoid potentially expensive repairs. Most manufacturers count lack of maintenance as an exception, and keeping up with maintenance appointments can help keep your warranty active. Most importantly, a well-maintained heat pump is far less likely to break down in the middle of the winter.
