Hot and cold spots are usually a warning sign that your HVAC system isn’t as efficient as it used to be. However, if your HVAC system isn’t even 15 years old yet—the average lifespan for an HVAC system—unbalanced air temperatures might be the culprit.
To help you improve indoor air comfort, Amber HVAC shares some air balancing tips in this guide.
Check your windows for drafts. Drafty windows could be responsible for hot and cold spots in your home. You can use the incense stick trick to quickly locate drafty windows. You do this by closing all the windows and doors and lighting an incense stick near the windows. The smoke should float toward the drafts, if there are any.
Make sure nothing is blocking the air vents. Your HVAC system won’t be able to distribute cool and warm air evenly if the air vents are blocked by furniture. As such, you need to make sure there isn’t any furniture blocking the air vents.
Check your air filters. Dirty air filters not only hamper airflow but also lower indoor air quality. This is why you should replace your filter every 30 to 60 days. However, pet owners should change their filter every month since pet dander and fur can quickly clog it up. And if anyone in your family has allergies, you should change the filter every 15 to 30 days. Alternatively, you can install an air purifier to maintain air quality and prevent allergy flare-ups.
If you still haven’t found what’s causing the hot and cold spots in your home, you should have a professional HVAC technician perform an inspection. They’re the only ones qualified to conduct air balancing and test your HVAC system to pinpoint uneven airflow or imbalances in air pressure.
